Views of Anacapa 200k

Moorpark Start/Finish: The course will follow the Moorpark Ridge to Ventura, over Casitas Pass to Carpinteria, down the coast to Ventura/Oxnard and back to Moorpark. Not flat, not hilly, hopefully just right as long as you did not stay up too late for New Years Eve. Route subject to change! (pdf of tentative route)

Control services are somewhat limited due to the New Year's holiday so don't count on your favorite place being open in Carpinteria or Port Hueneme - grab what you can - when you can. Vons is scheduled to be open at 6:00 on New Year's Day. So you have the opportunity at the ride start to grab something quick and restrooms will be available. The Corner Market in Oak View is also scheduled to be open. As far as the other controls go, you may want to get supplies at the first place you see open rather than trying your favorite place if you are really adverse to backtracking. The fastest among you will want to know that Wendy's in Port Hueneme will not open until 12:00 so you will either have to hunt around or wait for it to open. I will accept anything along or near Ventura Road in Port Hueneme given the circumstances.

Since the ride start is 1/2 mile from finish you may want to park closer to the finish (Read signs for Parking Restrictions). Java Kai will not open until 8:00am. Brevet Cards, Route Slips and Registration will be at the Start. Please be courteous to neighbors who may be trying to sleep in. Thank You! We will have food and drinks at the finish - maybe even a little pizza if the weather cooperates.

Orange County 200k

The route starts in Foothill Ranch in Orange County, goes through Santiago Canyon, straight to the coast most on paths, then along the PCH to the South end of Camp Pendleton and returns. It has about 6000 feet of climbing, but nothing is huge and it spread out enough making it relatively easy. Most riders will go through Laguna Beach early enough in the morning when the traffic is generally light. It's a good "newbie" route, but it's not as easy as the Malibu Coastal Cruise.

It is suggested that riders park near the finish and ride to the start. There is plenty of parking near the finish. The ride to the start will be 0.7 miles of downhill, along this route.

Orange County 300k

Starting in Foothill Ranch, this route follows Santiago Canyon Road to Orange, to Newport Beach on bike paths and the Back Bay, north on the PCH to the SART (Santa Ana River Trail), onto Corona, south on the I-15 corridor, around Lake Ellsinore, through the avocado orchards of De Luz, to Fallbrook, toward the coast to Oceanside, then north on the PCH to Dana Point and inland back to Foothill Ranch. Total climbing is approximately 10,000 feet with longer climbs mostly 6%, but a few short climbs over 10%. There will be food and beverages at the finish, even at 2AM!

Ventura 200k

The California Riviera 200km route which follows the coast from Ventura to Refugio State Beach and then turns around for more time along the coast. Climbing is relatively confined to the second quarter of the ride along East Mountain Road and Cathedral Oaks, the return is considerably flatter as riders return via Hollister Avenue and Hope Ranch. By the time riders reach Refugio, there should be a brisk wind to push them south towards the finish. Finish will be in the shopping center next to the elementary school, likely at the local frozen yogurt shop.

Simi Valley 400k

This is a limited service brevet. Controls will not be manned. Controls will be mini-markets, coffee shops and the like. This includes the finish! Be prepared. The Start and Finish are close to Amtrak Stations to facilitate this point to point brevet. Keep in mind that standard bikes are no problem on Amtrak but non-coupled tandems or recumbents are not allowed on the train. One way around this is to park a car in Solana Beach and take the train to the start. That way you can arrive at the finish with a car waiting for you.

San Luis Obispo 300k

The Wine Country 300K ACP Brevet starts at sunrise from Motel 6 North, in San Luis Obispo. This brevet is new, although it is basically the first 300k of last year's 400k #1008. This was a very popular ride last year. The route has just over 9,000 feet of vertical, with most of the climbing in the first 100 miles. It is a very scenic ride through rolling countryside, and should be a lot of fun for our randos. Most roads are lightly travelled back roads through vineyards, cattle ranches, farms, and wild country for about 100 miles. There will be a manned control out on Chimney Rock or Adelaide Roads to provide water and snacks.

The next 60 miles is along the coast on Highway 1: up to Ragged Point, and then a return to Morro Bay with a great tailwind. The brevet route passes through a variety of local towns, making it easy for riders to get food and drink most of the day and evening. We are able to travel right through Morro Bay this year, leaving on beautiful State Park Road since the road was just rebuilt. This will be a treat for cyclists, as it used to be the worst road in the county, always avoided.

The route enters Hwy 101 (a freeway) twice, once to go over Cuesta Grade (7.7 miles, with about 3 miles of 6% climb on a very wide shoulder) at the beginning of the ride (early morning, light traffic), and once to get from San Miguel to San Marcos Rd (less than a mile). Bicycles are permitted on these sections due to the lack of other roads. Both of these sections will be ridden during the daytime, and are unavoidable due to the geography and limited roads in the area. Both have wide shoulders available to cyclists, with very good visibility.

Please make your own reservations at the Motel 6 North or South for the best bargain. These are two separate locations, though only about 1/2 mile apart. The real start is at the NORTH hotel! There are other more luxurious hotels nearby (Courtyard Marriott, Royal Oaks Best Western, even Madonna Inn).

100k Moorpark Loop!

There will be homemade pizza at the finish!

Orange County 400k

Starting in Foothill Ranch, this route goes to Newport Beach via some trials and the Back Bay drive, PCH to the SART (Santa Ana River Trail) for the full 25 mile length, Corona, Norco, upper SART to the end, Redlands, south to Lake Perris, Hemet, the hill and wine country east of Temecula, south to Rainbow and through avocado country, west to Bonsall, back to Oceanside via San Luis Rey trail, north to San Clemente (old PCH and bike paths), Dana Point, and back to Foothill Ranch. Total climbing is approximately 10,000 feet with longer climbs mostly 6%, but a few short climbs over 10%. There will be food and beverages at the finish all night and even when the Sun comes up the next morning!

Palmdale 200k

This ride includes spectacular views of the California Poppy Reserve in full bloom and explores the northern borders of the Angeles Forest along the foothills of the Antelope Valley. You are in for about 6,000 ft of total climbing. Starting from my home in Quartz Hill we will tour the Poppy Reserve and western Antelope Valley before climbing into the Sierra Pelona foothills. Following a cross-town trip through Palmdale we will then head out towards the Big Rock Creek at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. Our return will visit the town of Littlerock before a final climb over Godde Hill. There will be manned water stops at Three Points and Sycamore Campground at opposite ends of the route, plus checkpoints at convenient locations in Palmdale and Littlerock. Back at the Harris home we will rustle up something good on the grill.

Orange Triple Loop 400k/600k

Description: Three loops, 400k riders ride the first two, 600k riders ride all three. Each loop begins and ends at the Motel6.

1: Very flat, fast century in LA County using mainly bike paths. Very few stop signs or red lights. Riders should finish this loop with a huge time buffer. Total distance is 99.5 miles with 1,200' climbing.

2: 150 mile loop. Head inland, mainly gentle climbing for 75 miles to Beaumont at the top of the ride at 2800'. More than half the total 600k climbing is in this loop. Long gentle descent back to the hotel for the official overnight stop. Total distance is 149.3 miles with 5,200' climbing. 400k riders are done now, 600k riders will head on out for the last 200k loop.

3: 126 mile loop down the coast to Oceanside and back. I strongly recommend using Camp Pendleton if you can (daylight only and photo ID required). Riders unfamiliar with Camp Pendleton should simply follow the bike route signs through the base. Turn around in Oceanside and head back north. Turn inland at Dana Point and head back to the motel via Lake Forest and Irvine. Total distance is 126.1 miles with 3,200' climbing.

Support is mainly from the HQ room at the start/end motel with one manned control at mile 52. HQ support will be food and water but no beds. I recommend booking your room for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights as you will be returning to it three times during the ride. There will be no roving support or bag drops. You will never be more than a 90 minute drive from HQ so carry a cell phone in case you need help.

Casitas Pass CW 100k

Cayucos 200k/600k

200k Info

A classic route that was previously used by the Cayucos Cycling Club's brevet series. This route begins in the sleepy seaside town of Cayucos and heads south to loop around SLO's airport before heading north. Aside from rollers, the only hill that riders will encounter in the first half is Turri Road. From that point on the winds will begin to pick up and riders may likely feel like slugs migrating north for summer, but have no fear because upon hitting the turn around at Ragged Point you'll have that awesome wind at your back and the return journey can sometimes take less than half the time it took to head north.

Beautiful route along the coast with a little bit of everything. Climbing is approximately 1600m over the entire 200km. There are only a few turns on this route, so riders should be able to look at the surroundings more than their route sheet.

600k Info

Route will be the same as last year's May 600km, the Bolsa Road 600km Brevet. Riders will depart in the early morning and head over the mountains up Old Creek Road and then down 46 into Paso Robles and the first control of San Miguel. Riders will stock up on supplies there before heading north along Indian Valley/Peach Tree Roads until they join CA-25. Riders will continue north for over 100 miles of nothing but remote and picturesque California valley lands until they reach Hollister (there will be a control mid-way). From there it is up and over into the Salinas Valley where they will head South to King City and the overnight stop. Ride organizers will have room for riders to sleep, food, and limited supplies. Riders will then head over Jolon Road into the Lockwood area. From there it is a hop over Hare Canyon before rejoining the outbound route for the final kilometers with a stop in Ragged Point before cruising South with a tailwind into Cayucos. Ride ends at a fish and chips restaurant at the base of the pier in Cayucos.

Because of the remote nature of this route, riders should be prepared for potentially warm and very cold temperatures. With a few exceptions, the roads are in decent condition, but riders should be prepared for all situations. Staff will be watching the course over remote sections of the route which do not have mobile phone service. Riders are encouraged to carry all of their own supplies, although one small drop bag is allowed (equal size of a plastic grocery bag). This bag will be available at the overnight stop.

Route and details are subject to change. Please check the PCH Randonneurs Google Group for any changes in detail.

Tour of OC Bikepaths 200k

Description: This 200k takes advantage of as many class A bike paths in Orange County as possible. It's almost the same as last year's Tour of OC Bikepaths but I moved the start/end to a public parking area and shortened the ride by about two miles. I also simplified the route at mile 75 to take advantage of a shortcut I found. The ride starts SW of Corona and heads on the SART and PCH to Seal Beach. Then riders follow PCH almost all the way down to San Clemente using several beach bike trails. From San Clemente we turn back North to Dana Point where we head inland on more bike paths climbing to the top of Santiago Canyon. After a fast descent we use wide roads with bike lanes to get to Villa Park and then return to the SART to finish the ride. There will be roving support but no bag drops on this brevet. Total distance is 126.3 miles (80 miles of class A bike paths) with 5,200' of climbing.

Santa Barbara Lazy Acres 100k

Heritage Valley & Ojai 100k

Moorpark 200k

The course starts along the Moorpark Ridge and drops into the Santa Clara Valley via Balcom Canyon Road. You will be going DOWN the infamous climb so make sure you have your brakes in excellent condition. Once in the Santa Clara Valley it is a quick run out to the coast where cooler temps prevail. Hopefully we can make it to Santa Barbara before the wind picks up for a nice lunch in the Harbor. You can take a virtual tour of the turnaround point to familiarize yourself with the area. If the weather cooperates and follows normal patterns we will have a nice tailwind from Santa Barbara all the way back to Moorpark with the strongest winds pushing us up the Santa Rosa valley to the finish. It is a fast flat summer fun ride. Come join us.

There is ample parking along Fremont St. in front of their home.

The Big Sur Megameter 1000k

The Big Sur Megameter (a megameter is equal to 1000 kilometers) will start in Salinas at the same hotel as the 600km that starts the next day. The first day will be a loop of a bit less than 400km which will take riders on a tour of the greater Monterey Bay area while hitting as much of this fabulous coastline as possible. The first night will be spent back in Salinas. Riders will then head south towards Moorpark along a route which is slightly modified from the Big Sur 600km route, but still enjoys the long coastal stretches with all of the benefits and detriments that come with a ruggedly beautiful stretch of relatively unspoiled coastline. Second night will likely be in San Luis Obispo at the Motel 6 that PCHR often uses as a start/finish, but stronger riders may wish to push on to Lompoc. Riders will leave SLO and continue south, Lompoc will be a food stop for most riders. Riders will continue south through Santa Barbara and along the Rincon into Ventura County before the slight incline of Santa Rosa Road up to the finish in Moorpark.

There are sure to be a few surprises on the ride, but the route is being worked on and a draft should be available by May. Much like the Big Sur 600km, there is a lot of climbing on this route, but the scenery is incredible. As much as possible, the bulk of the climbing occurs in the first 600km of the ride, although there are coastal rollers throughout the course.

At the finish, riders will have ridden a hair over 1000km and traced about half of California's coastline.

Riders will need to arrange for transportation for this ride. The route is a one-way ride from Salinas to Moorpark. There are is an Amtrak station near Salinas, and an Amtrak/Metrolink station near Moorpark. It is up to riders to figure out how they will manage transport before and after the ride. Drop bag service will be provided for one small PBP-sized drop bag which will be available in SLO and then later at the finish.

If anyone wishes to volunteer for this ride, please email the event master. Volunteer Support is needed for: gear setup/transportation; manning the overnight controls. There will be opportunities to help for time ranging from a few hours to the entire weekend.

Salinas 600k

Pasadena 200k

This ride is on a Sunday, for all you AYSO parents out there. You will start in Pasadena and basically do and out-and-back to Piru, going up and over Little Tujunga Canyon and Bear Divide. You will pass by the Wildlife Way Station and get some great views of Santa Clarita. The total elevation gain is about 8000 feet.

Starting Place: Northeast corner of the intersection of Altadena Dr. and Washington Blvd., Pasadena, 91107. This is a parking lot for a dialysis facility that is always empty on Sundays. There is a McDonald's across the street with a restroom. Rider check-in and registration will be between 6:15 and 6:55.

Malibu 200k

The Malibu Coastal Cruise 200km is a classic route for our club which we usually run in November. With only 3800 feet of climbing, the route is a fast one which usually encourages people to ride together. The route begins in Malibu and winds its way up north to Carpinteria where riders will likely have a quick bite to eat before heading south along the coast again. Given that it is November, there is a chance of some rain, but if the weather holds then the ride should be a beautiful day with near constant views of the ocean. The ride will end at the same location as the start.

The ride will start where we have in the past, at the shopping center with the big grocery store (Ralph's). A map can be found here: http://g.co/maps/sg3vz. Don't park in the shopping center's lot, park on the street around the back which is just to the south a bit (Malibu Road). Once you have your gear ready, roll around into the center and I will have registration stuff ready out in front of Starbucks at one of the outside at one of the tables.
