February 21st Cool Breeze 300k

This route pays homage to the Cool Breeze Century. After the start in Moorpark you will climb over the Moorpark Ridge via Grimes Canyon and then make it out to the coast in Ventura. Once there, you generally follow the coast up to Montecito where you run through the foothills of overlooking Santa Barbara, then out to El Capitan and back along the coast. The time spent in the hills above Santa Barbara is a favorite route for many for its beautiful views. On the return from El Capitan you should expect, but no guarantees, a tailwind that will follow you most of the way back to Moorpark.

Route finding can be a challenge in the hills above Santa Barbara and I recommend that you review the route in advance on Ride with GPS in the Satellite view to help you familiarize yourself with it, paying particular attention to the location where you descend from Mountain Drive. Descending too early on a route with secret controls can be a real problem. With that in mind, always stick to the route sheet. 😉

On February 21, Sunrise will be at 06:35 and Sunset at 17:46. We will be starting just before civil twilight, so front & rear lights, reflective leg bands & reflective vests are required for all riders. Our start time is an attempt at maximizing daylight for all riders. Please check out the RUSA rules on reflective gear. Be responsible and be safe.

Food & drinks: Vons and Starbucks will be open at the start (Vons has an open bathroom). The pizza oven will be in operation at the finish and we will be making pizzas to order. Don’t bonk, but try to arrive hungry.

Start Location: Tierra Rejada Park – Across Mountain Trail from the Von’s Shopping Center 4241 Tierra Rejada, Moorpark, CA 93021. The finish will be approximately one mile from the start location. You may wish to park closer to the finish, just be courteous to our neighbors and make sure you read the parking signs.

To register for this event please complete the registration form and waiver and make sure to add yourself to the registered rider list so we can make sure to have food/drinks for everyone. Bring your completed registration form and a check made out to Channel Islands Bicycle Club or cash for the appropriate fee so we can get you on your way quickly.

SAG / Support: This is a typical Randonneur event where you are required to be self-sufficient. However, SAG will be available on call to those who have a cell phone. Given the length of the course it may be some time before we can get to you, so be prepared with sufficient warm clothing/emergency blankets/food/water, etc. so you are comfortable and safe until we can reach you. As always in an emergency call 911.
